Its parent company, Carlton Communications, developed a media empire in the mid and late '90s, with acquisitions including Central in 1994 and Westcountry in 1996, as well as independent production companies Action Time and Planet 24.

Carlton lost its on-air identity on 28 October 2002, and Carlton Communications merged with Granada on 2 February 2004 to form ITV plc.
