Granada began broadcasting on 3 May 1956. It originally served the North of England (including Yorkshire) on Mondays to Fridays, with ABC broadcasting at weekends. Following a reorganisation of the ITV franchises, Granada served the North West for the full week from 29 July 1968, the Yorkshire area passing to Yorkshire Television.
Having survived all the ITV franchise rounds, Granada took advantage of relaxed regulations in the 1990s by buying several other ITV companies, including LWT and Yorkshire. After a single ITV company was formed in 2002, "Granada" was the name chosen for programmes shown on other broadcasters, later taking the name ITV Studios.
