Harlech began broadcasting on 20 May 1968 as the second ITV station for Wales and the West of England, replacing TWW. It adopted its common initialism, HTV, when it began broadcasting in colour in April 1970. Welsh-language programmes were broadcast by HTV Wales until November 1982, when they were transferred to the new S4C.

HTV was taken over by United News and Media in 1996; most of its assets were subsequently acquired by Carlton Communications in October 2000. It lost its on-air identity on 28 October 2002.
