Biography

British comic actor who's rarely been off the airwaves. In the 1960s he was at the forefront of British satire, mixing it with funny types like John Cleese. With Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie, the The Goodies were an iconic 1970s comedy trio.

He continued to work with many of these colleagues on programmes such as the radio series I'm Sorry, I'll Read that Again, Hello Cheeky (with Barry Cryer and John Junkin), and the long-running I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

Trivia

He was the voice of the narrator on the Nutty (nowadays The Dandy) and BBC cartoon superhero, Bananaman.

He served as Rector of the University of St Andrews from 1979 to 1982, following in the footsteps of previous rectors Alan Coren and Frank Muir.

His mother played lacrosse player at an international level. Well, someone had to.
