Biography
A member of a journalistic dynasty - his grandfather was a newspaper proprietor, his father was a journalist, and his sons David and Jonathan both followed him into current affairs broadcasting. His own career saw him become one of Britain's best-known presenters, entrusted with providing commentary on important public occasions such as the coronation of Elizabeth II and the funerals of George VI, John F. Kennedy and Winston Churchill, while his regular jobs included fronting Panorama and the radio series Down Your Way.
He broke taboos by making a public announcement of his diagnosis with testicular cancer in 1965; he died from the disease later that year at the age of 52.
