ATV was the second ITV station to go on air, after Associated-Rediffusion. It served London at weekends from 24 September 1955, and the Midlands on Mondays to Fridays from 17 February 1956. Following a reorganisation of the ITV franchises, ATV served the Midlands for the full week from 29 July 1968, while relinquishing the London weekend franchise to LWT.

ATV became Central on 1 January 1982, as part of a restructuring in order to place more focus on its broadcast area.
