Revision as of 17:24, 4 October 2007

The approximate rules by which I construct the TV guide, last updated 4 Oct 2007:

  • Include all programmes that might reasonably be construed as game show related on analogue channels available in the UK: BBC1, BBC2, ITV, C4, S4C, C5, BBC Radio 1-5, Classic FM, Virgin 1215, Talk Sport. Include regional variations.
  • Include programmes that are clearly game shows on other widely-available channels: BBC3, BBC4, CBBC, Cbeebies, ITV2-4, CITV, E4, More4, Virgin1, FiveUS, Five Life, Radio Scotland, Radio Wales, Radio Cymru, Radio Ulster, BBC7, RTE Radio 1 (LW and MW schedules). Also include S4C Digidol, BBC-HD, and any other HD schedules that may arise.
  • As they're available on analogue television in parts of Northern Ireland, include clear game shows on RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TG4, and Channel 6.
  • Include all programmes on Challenge, 7am - 2am.
  • Include programmes that are clearly game shows on widely-viewed channels (widely-viewed: 5 minutes per person in an early winter week - currently using the first week of December 2006): Boomerang, Bravo, Discovery, Disc Real Time, Disney, Eurosport, Hallmark, Living, Nickelodeon, Paramount Comedy, Sci-Fi, UK Drama, UKG2.
  • It's unlikely that they will have anything worth noting, but glance at other channels: Film4, UK History, UK Bright Ideas, The Hits, TMF, Oneword, 6 Music, Asian Network, World Service for clear game shows. If they ever need to be included, add them to the channel list.
  • Selectively include programmes from other channels available on cable and satellite, including: Animal Planet, Biography, Bravo2, Cartoon Network, Discovery Science, Jetix, Living2, National Geographic, Sky3, Trouble, TV5, UK Documentary, UK Style.
  • For reasons of space, exercise discretion with spin-off shows and as-live coverage; they'll generally get a note under the main programmes.
  • Exercise discretion with narrative repeats: listing all the overnight repeats of Countdown or the lunchtime re-runs of Deal or No Deal is a lot of work for little value.
  • Generally, do not include segments within hosted radio or television shows, unless there's a sound editorial reason.
  • At this time, do not include game shows on BBC local radio stations in England - there is a limit to our parochialism. I will review if and when all stations become available via satellite throughout the country.
  • Do not include purely call-and-lose programmes, anything on subscription channels, or pay-to-view programmes.
  • Do not include satellite-only channels. That includes Sky 1.
  • As a rule of thumb, outside the top three categories, I'm concentrating on 8am-midnight weekends, 6pm-midnight weekdays.
  • The general format is:
    • Highlights
    • Saturday
    • Sunday
    • Weekdays
    • Monday
    • and so on to
    • Friday
    • Challenge
      • split further by days
  • Formatting: use 2nd level headings (three equals signs) for each day, 3rd level headings for days in Challenge section.
  • If removing a narrative entirely, please remember to remove the || immediately before it, otherwise there'll be a blank cell.
