The company was founded by Tom Gutteridge in 1985 as Mentorn Films. In 1997 it merged with documentary makers Barraclough Carey Productions, forming Mentorn Barraclough Carey, and in 2000 it was acquired by The Television Corporation (which also owned sports production company Sunset+Vine). The Television Corporation was itself acquired in 2006 by Welsh-based Tinopolis; by this point, Mentorn Barraclough Carey had been renamed simply Mentorn.

Outside of game shows, Mentorn has produced the BBC's Question Time since 1998, and police documentary series Traffic Cops since 2003.
