Broadcast

Saffron Cherry Productions and Big Circus Media for 5, 19 April 2025 to present

Synopsis

Two teams of celebrities compete and answer questions from the 1970s.

What would happen if The Big Fat Quiz of the Year team had a themed quiz about the 1970s? Questions, challenges, near-the-knuckle smut, and host Jimmy Carr larking about. After two decades on air, the format is predictable.

Now, what happens if Channel 5 asks for something a bit like The Big Fat Quiz of the Year about the 1970s, only far cosier? This show is the result.

The set was made to look like a 1970s living room, particularly the bleesome colours.

Sally Lindsay is the host for a grab-bag of rounds about the decade fashion forgot. Some questions were an excuse to play old clips, like Derek Nimmo turning himself into a punk rocker. Some were excuses to ramble, they moved seamlessly from "sitcom sofas" to "the departments in the theme to Are You Being Served?.

There were stunts, not least when the captains tried to act out films from the contents of a prop box. And the moment when the panel were asked to guess the flavour of Angel Delight.

This Quiz Night was background viewing, we could just watch one segment, or switch off halfway through, without feeling we'd missed too much. Sally Lindsay proved a capable host, rolling with the jokes without ever losing control of the show.

If 5 (or whatever they're calling the channel this week) want more episodes, this format could run and run. If they don't, we're not missing too much.

Quiz Night (2) By gum, that's vile wallpaper behind Sally.
