Meridian replaced TVS as the ITV station for the South and South East of England on 1 January 1993. It was originally a subsidiary of Mills & Allen International (MAI), which merged with United Newspapers in 1996 to form United News and Media (UNM). UNM also owned Anglia and HTV.

After failing to merge with Carlton Communications, UNM sold its ITV assets to Granada in July 2000. Meridian lost its on-air identity on 28 October 2002.
