The product of a merger between Associated-Rediffusion and ABC, Thames took over from the former as the ITV station for London on Mondays to Fridays on 30 July 1968. After losing its franchise to Carlton in the 1991 ITV franchise auction, it ceased broadcasting on 31 December 1992 and became an independent production company.

Thames was bought by Pearson International (now FremantleMedia) in 1996, and lost its identity following a merger into Talkback in 2003. Shows made by this TalkbackThames company are listed in Talkback. The "Thames" credit was revived in 2012 for Fremantle's non-comedy entertainment programmes.
